Getting To Know The Common File Extensions

With the debut of computer and different application software, many common file extensions were derived.
Apart from giving a unique identity system for each type of file, these extensions also helped in getting rid of the complication that multiple applications may make to the users.
The software makers, including the companies who create operating systems, offered many extensions that are aimed at boosting the productivity while using a computer.
Although single type of file can be opened with multiple applications, connecting to a specific application that can run it faster will always make a difference in the front end.

The common extensions can be categorized into different groups including data, text, audio and video, image, executable, spread sheet and database, web, plugin, font, settings, encoded, compressed, disk image, developer, backup, miscellaneous files etc.
To start with the text files, the extensions in the category include.doc, .

docx, .
log, .rtf, .
txt, .

wpd, .

msg,.pages etc. Among them, the Microsoft Word Document and the Text documents are the common file extensions.

The data type files include extensions such as.

csv, .

dat, .

ppt, sdf ,.
xml etc.

Under the audio-video category, the common file types are.
mp3, .
aac, .
mid, .
wav, .
wma, 3gp, .
flv, .
avi, .mp4, .mov etc The extensions in the image category include.

jpg, bmp, gif, png, psd, drw etc, further categorized into vector image, raster image, 3d image etc The major applications included in the office packages are coming under the spreadsheet and database files.

The extensions that are executable include exe, app, bat, cgi, com, jar, pif, vb etc Although some of the common extensions are compatible only with certain platforms or operating systems, some others will run on almost all platforms.

It should also be noted that the mobile applications may have some different codes if you are in search of the file extensions for mobile applications. Many of the file types for the mobile platforms are newly developed and the support to the common platforms is yet to come.
While choosing the right type from the file extension, the factors that should be given preference are speed, portability, global support and the size.
If one of the file extension type that you are using is having global support but with a bigger file size, it may not be good on all occasions, especially when you are going to make use of it on a location where you have some sort of restrictions on the file size.

So, all the factors should be considered before choosing the best one out of common file types.

Another issue that users often face with the file extensions is that the latest version or the update of an extension will not be available everywhere, will be having better performance though.
Before using such common file extensions, make sure that the other parties who are going to use the file is also having access to it.
